Welcome sixth grade scientists and scholars! My name is Ms. Petersen, and I am very excited for you to begin your first year in the Kennedy Middle School Future Scientists Program. As scientists, I will hold you to very high expectations for both behavior and learning. In order to make Room C-9 the most productive room in the entire school, we must meet all expectations, follow all procedures and live by a few “best practices”. You are scientists now, so your number one rule is to be professional. (We will talk about what professionalism looks like in school during the first week.) School is a full-time job, and it should be your main priority.

Classroom Rules:
  • Follow directions the first time.
  • Cellphones are turned off and out of reach during class.
  • When someone is speaking, your eyes are on him/her, and your voice is turned off.
  • Keep your hands and feet to yourself and free of distractions.
  • Use kinds words; no put downs.

Classroom Expectations:
  • Be on time every day.
    • o Begin the day by silently finding your seat, taking out a pencil and a piece of paper, and beginning our Science Starter.
    • Stay in your seat unless you have permission to do otherwise.
    • Turn in assignments on time.
    • Be respectful of yourself and others.
    • Follow procedures exactly.
    • Ask questions.
    • Work in a safe and orderly manner.

  • You will receive a homework packet every Monday.
  • The packet is due for full credit on Thursday.
    • o Your packet must be fully completed when you turn it in. If it isn’t, I will give it back to you to finish, and it will be considered late.
    • o I will be available all week before/after school, during lunch, and through email or phone calls. Please do not hesitate to ask me questions before your assignment is due.
  • Late homework:
    • o If you turn in your homework packet a day late (Friday), the maximum grade that you can earn is a 75%.
    • o If you turn your homework in later than Friday, the maximum grade that you can earn is a 50%.

Grading Scale:
  • Formal assessments = 45%
    • o (unit tests, end-of-unit projects, science fair)
    • Informal assessments = 45%
      • o (class participation, labs, notebook, quizzes, exit tickets)
      • Homework = 10%

Big Goals:
It is important for us to be working toward something that matters. We want to make the most out of this year and spend every moment learning. Because of this, my big goal for our class is at least 85% mastery of every single unit and an 85% or better on our final, summative exam. In addition to this, I want every one of my students to know that education is not something that only happens in the classroom. We are lifelong learners and scientists no matter where we are. As a way of retaining our knowledge and opening doors for ourselves in the future, my goal is for every one of my students to attend either an academic or leadership-focused summer program. More information will be given about this goal in a later parent night. Lastly, our goals are living and changing and they will continue to grow as I learn more about our class and as we create even bigger goals together!
